THE TOMORROW WAR - REVIEW

Updated: Jul 30, 2021

The Tomorrow War is a sci-fi film directed by Chris McKay in is his Live-Action directorial debut. The movie stars Chris Pratt, Yvonne Strahovski, J. K. Simmons, Betty Gilpin, Sam Richardson, Edwin Hodge, Jasmine Mathews, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, and Keith Powers.

The movie plot kicks off when soldiers from the future (the year 2051) arrive on present-day earth to deliver an urgent message: thirty years into the future humans are losing war against deadly alien species. Now, nations of the world came together to fight the war in the future by sending people from the present-day into the future using the time machine.

From the movie title and trailers, it was made pretty clear that it is going to be a time travel action movie and it’s going to be great and it did come to pass except it is not a great movie. This movie is far from being a good movie let alone being great and it has a lot of issues.

First of all the plot of the movie: I love the idea of a movie about sending people into the future to fight a war against the aliens. But it’s the minor but important details that are missing and cause a lot of damage to the movie. For instance, when people are sent into the future and you as an audience can’t tell if it’s the future because the buildings, the cars, the surroundings, etc. look the same as the present-day earth, the movie didn’t bother to show/prove/illustrate us that in any way. There is a difference between telling something and showing something, the movie tells us the characters are in the future but fails to show us that. Here is another issue that could have been rectified had the director given a bit more attention to little but important detail when Dan meets his daughter and recognizes it’s her daughter but you as an audience are left unsatisfied. The movie doesn’t show even a single characteristic which is shared by the younger and the older versions of Dan Foresters daughter Muri, they(kid Muri and adult Muri) don’t talk the same way, they don’t bear a mark or wear a locket, she doesn’t even speak a single dialog which only she and her father would know. Again the movie tells us that she is his daughter but doesn’t bother to show/prove/illustrate that in any way. There are plenty of examples like that.

Moving on to the cast, Star-Lord I mean Chris Pratt who plays Dan Forester, his performance was really bad, I was confused by the emotions he was showing, I kept thinking is he trying to be sarcastic, or is he being serious. Part of the blame for bad performance can be shifted to bad writing. J K Simons is in this movie too and he did a pretty good job. Man J K Simmons is a badass who is still kicking ass in his 60s. These were the most noticeable performances.

The action scenes were mediocre, you don’t get to see memorable action scenes; the action scenes are just put in the movie to qualify as an action movie.

There is not a single aspect of the movie which I can say is good, from the plot to acting; everything in this movie is just bland. This makes me question the purpose of the movie, why was it even made. The jokes in this movie fall flat like every other thing. One can argue that the movie budget was low, but there are plenty of movies with a low budget, but that didn't stop them from being a masterpiece. I wouldn’t have cared about the action scenes unless they were going to be something never seen before, the filmmakers instead should have focused more on the writing and acting part.

Conclusion:

The Tomorrow War is a movie where you will question the purpose of its existence. There are no takeaways from the movie, there are no memorable action scenes or dialog, and the jokes fall flat. The little but important details are missing from the movie which could be bothersome. The Tomorrow War is a type of movie which even if you missed watching it won’t make any difference.
